Ano Syros is the medieval and the first settlement of Syros. It is a classical cycladic medieval settlement that is very densely built with narrow roads. The overall effect reminds a fortified citadel. Ano Syros is inhabited by Catholic Greeks. The reason of this architecture is that inhabitants should be able to defend the city against the pirates fighting back from their windows as the houses - buildings are so tightly built against each other that they form a form of wall. At the top of the hill you will discover the Catholic Church of Saint George with its breathtaking view of the harbour and Ermoupolis.
